Welcome to MFMS
My name is Debbie Johnson and I am starting my 17th year teaching in the Maroa-Forsyth School District. I have been here throughout my teaching career, except for my first year where you would have found me substituting in one of the grade schools in the district.
After graduating from Richland Community College with my Associates of Science degree, and earning a Reading Endorsement along with my Bachelors degree from Illinois State University, I became the Title I Reading teacher at Maroa Grade School helping K-2 and 5-6 grade students learn to read. I considered this my "dream job" as I had wanted to be a Reading teacher since I was 5 years old. My inspiration came from my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Bartman. She was a compassionate and giving teacher and I wanted to grow up and be just like her!!
While teaching Title I, I continued my education at ISU and earned my Masters degree in Reading. After 6 years in the Title I position, I moved up to the 7th & 8th grade Reading position where I get to spend most of my day with some awesome students!
When I am not at school, you will find me at my new home in Monticello with my husband, Aaron. My husband and I have three grown children. Our oldest daughter Michelle is 28 years old and lives with her husband Mike in Bloomington. They are parents to our first grandchild, Emersyn Rose, who turned a year old in May. My husband and I are very excited to be grandparents for the first time! Our youngest daughter, Megan is 26 years old and works as a Certified Medical Assistant in Schaumburg, Il. Seth, our 22 year old son, lives in Pittsburgh, PA and is a certified gunsmith.
Some of the activities I enjoy outside of school are traveling, relaxing at our cabin in western Illinois, crocheting, exercising with my husband, visiting with friends and family, and of course...Reading!!!
Teaching reading has been a passion of mine since I was a young girl learning to make sense of the marks on a page of a book. I was intrigued by the places I could visit, and the people I would meet in books without leaving home. It is my hope to instill the same kind of passion for reading in my students as I feel every time I pick up a book.
I am looking forward to another wonderful year of teaching. Happy Reading!!
